RISING DRUG COSTS: Californians have been notified that the cost of generic glaucoma drugs will rise by 64% and one asthma med will increase 50% on May 1. How can such increases be justified and explained?

FACTOID: According to the IRS the average American pays 13.6 cents out of each dollar in federal income taxes, with those just below the 1 percent paying 18.4 percent and the top 1 percent paying 27 percent. In perspective the average American earns $54,000 a year. A person in the top 1% earns at least $4 million annually. While their tax bill is double the average American’s their income is 74 times greater.
FACTOID: In 1942, the year of my birth, it cost $.27 cents to go to the movies. In the early 1950s a Saturday afternoon matinee at the Lyric Theater included a feature film, a serial, a cartoon, and a box of popcorn. Total cost, one thin quarter!
FACTOID: Japanese manufacturer, Funai, just announced it would manufacturer the last VCR tape player this month. The “duh” moment was their citing a declining market. There is now lots of young people who can’t tell you what VCR or VHS stands for.
