And They Will Climb Over It

A lot has been said about building walls in the past year or so. Trump made building a wall along the Mexican-American border a major part of his campaign. And he seemed to convince large numbers of his believe anything base that Mexico was going to pay for it.

The US-Mexican border at San Ysidro, CA. One of the busiest crossings on earth.

The proposed purpose of the wall is to protect Americans. Protect Americans by keeping all those raping Mexicans out of our country and to stop the flow of thugs and drugs. Before the first shovel of dirt is turned some things need to be considered.

First, the US-Mexican border is 1900 miles long. That’s 600 miles longer than the Great of China which failed to keep the Chinese from falling to the hordes of Mongol warriors who eventually brought down the Song Dynasty in the 13th century.

I don’t know if you’ve seen the border between our two nations but it is some of the most remote and hostile country in North America. That alone acts as a wall, it’s simply too dangerous and inhospitable to venture into certain parts of the landscape. People know this and so do drug smugglers. They’d much rather crossover in more hospitable areas and many of those areas already have walls.

One of the busiest border crossings in the world is between Tijuana, MX and San Ysidro, CA. where over 90,000 northbound travelers crossover everyday of the year. For years now San Ysidro, and other major crossings, has had a wall. Still major amounts of illegal immigrants and drugs routinely go unnoticed and make their way into the US. Some get caught but the bulk doesn’t. The reality is that it’s easier and safer to cross at a highly guarded and walled crossing than risk the wilderness.

At sometime in his life General George S. Patton said, “Fixed fortifications (walls) are monuments to man’s stupidity.  If mountain ranges and oceans can be overcome, anything made by man can be overcome.” In other words, if you build a wall 30′ high somebody will go to Home Depot and buy a 40′ ladder or a cheap shovel.

History has shown us over and over that walls don’t work. Walled cities didn’t work in Medieval Europe, a wall didn’t work in China, the Berlin Wall didn’t keep East Berliners from becoming West Berliners, and the Atlantic Wall didn’t keep the Allies from finding their way to the heart of the Nazi Empire.

This proposed wall is a folly, it is Trump’s Folly, and it is the folly of those who blindly believe anything Trump tells them. As an American I have at least two choices, believe what a man who knows little about history tells me or, believe what my knowledge of history says to me. I think I’ll believe in me.
