I don’t know how many times I’ve read the U.S. Constitution but it’s been more than a few. I’ve taken several college level courses specifically on the subject, read a wide variety of supporting documents, studied countless court decisions, and taught both American History and Government for 26 years.
But, last week I heard a newscaster remark that the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives is not required to be a member of the house. Without delay I Googled the subject and learned that nowhere in the Constitution does it require membership. But, throughout our history every speaker has been a member and was chosen by a majority of the party in control of the house.
Hey, who knew? My grandchildren think I know everything. Think I’ll just keep quiet and leave it that way!
