Many of you know I served aboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (DD-850) in the early 1960s. One of the events I was witness to was the JPK serving as the presidential viewing platform for the 1962 America’s Cup Races off shore of Newport, Rhode Island. For several days the president, his wife, and a number of their guest came aboard our ship to be taken to the sight of the world’s premiere 12 meter yacht races.
While doing research I came across color footage of President Kennedy, Jacqueline and others watching the events of September 15, 1962. Little more than a month later the JPK would be headed into the heart of the Cuban Missile Crisis and president Kennedy would face his greatest challenge.
