Free, White, Twenty-One, and Halliburton

Larry 'n NassauI read the following headline and paragraph in a recent edition of the New York Times. Seriously, the maximum fine is only $200,000 and NO BODY went to jail? WHY? And that Halliburton agreed to donate $55 million means nothing to a corporation that has literally made billions and billions of dollars from government contracts that have in some way or another tarnished the earth. America’s prisons are filled with poor people who are there because they can’t find a decent and meaningful job. Why isn’t the CEO and/or Chairman of Halliburton a cell mate to one of them? Because both are free, white, over twenty-one, and rich.

Halliburton: We Destroyed Evidence

“Halliburton has agreed to plead guilty of destroying evidence critical to the investigation of the Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 people and soaked the Gulf of Mexico in oil in 2010. The company ordered workers to erase simulations that led to BP ignoring its advice about the construction of the ill-fated deep-sea oil rig. The deletions were part of an effort to shift blame onto BP, which has also pleaded guilty to criminal charges. Halliburton will pay the maximum fine of $200,000 for the crime, and has made a voluntary $55 million donation to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.”
