Hard economic hard times gives rise to hard or radical thinking, that is a simple historical truth. I just finished reading an article reporting that residents in over a dozen states have filed petitions asking that their states be permitted to leave the Union.
There is nothing new about cities, states regions and territories wanting to secede from the United States. Many secessionist movements can be found throughout American history and a 2008 poll reported that 22% of the American people believed states and regions have that right. As we all know, however, the American Civil War, supposedly decided the secession issue forever. The war was fought and the Union preserved.
Obviously, not all agree and a list of those states in which residents have filed petitions shows that there are still those who want the South to rise again. The list includes residents from Alabama, Arkansas,Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi,Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon,South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
