Religion in America is pretty much given a free ride when it comes to tax obligations and financial accountability. In a nation that claims separation of church and state I’ve never understood the justification for this. To me granting religion tax exempt status is the government fostering religion, which is not its job. I realize religions do good things and would be better satisfied if a distinction was made between their good works and their day-to-day God business. Tax them and hold them accountable like any other business but permit them to deduct their charitable works like we all can do. That would bring in an additional $145 billion over a 10-year period.
