I had always known of Andersonville in Georgia and how horrible a POW prisoner camp it was but didn’t really appreciate the horror of it until paying a visit several years ago. Doing some follow up research I discovered the North also had its share of prison camps to be less than proud of. One of these was located on Ohio’s Lake Erie at Johnson’s Island. There was a POW camp for Confederate prisoners and to this day there remains a Confederate cemetery on the island.
If you want to know more and see some photos pay a visit to Sally Kennedy’s North Coast Muse blog and read the latest piece she has. Sally has a deep historical of that era and I think you’ll find a visit worth while.
