All Along the Border People are Fleeing America

Since 2008 and the financial collapse in America I’ve seen consistent reports that the number of illegal immigrants in this country is shrinking. To the political right, however, it is of no matter. They continue to pound the spike of immigration fear into the hearts of their fearful, xenophobic, followers.

But, if there is some fearful soul, cowering beneath the four-poster in their bedroom, who can be reached with a little light of truth, here’s a brief piece that appeared on The Daily Beast. Oh, don’t let the name scare you, it’s just a news site and not really a monster.

Border Crossings Drop Sharply

Illegal immigration isn’t as rampant as some Republican debates might lead you to believe. Apprehensions at the border fell 25 percent to 327,500 in 2011, according to The New York Times. That’s the lowest level of illegal crossings since the Nixon administration. The Times cites several factors as reasons for the drop: a lagging economy, increased border control, and soaring smuggling costs.

The full story can be read at the New York Time’s online edition, December 9, 2011.

  1. I work for a company that sells commercial landscaping equipment. We have many Hispanic customers but that number has dropped in the last 2 years. The ones remaining told us some of the others went back to Mexico because they can’t get work here anymore. Also because the cost of living has gone up too. Now, granted, some were probably here illegally but with the economy the way it is in the US I guess it wasn’t worth the risk anymore.
